Ever heard the saying if you knew better you'd do better? Well, that's the mantra I found myself living by in that weird space after writing my first book, and before writing my second book. Now that I reflect on my first self-publishing journey.
I've made tons of mistakes and want to share these three mistakes with you so you can avoid making the same mistakes on yourself publishing your journey.
I started writing my first children's book when I was a sophomore in college. I was clueless, and I sat on it for a few years. Maybe longer than I should have. I speak about my journey as an author very openly, and it hasn't been easy—at least the road to being a successful self-published one. Years ago, when I started writing illustrators and illustrators kept falling through. I started getting discouraged, thinking maybe an author wasn't for me anymore. It wasn't until 2016 when I relocated to Los Angeles and found an illustrator that believed in my project and vision. It all played into divine timing. Everything I can't begin to tell you how much money I would've saved if I would have known what I was doing or had some.
One day my illustrator had asked me a crucial question. "What size do you want your book?" I had no concept of formatting. I was baffled. I had no clue what all it entailed. All I knew is that I needed an illustrator for my graphics. He just started to draw, and that's when the research began, and I didn't get done overnight. It felt like I was writing and getting ready to defend my dissertation. It was years of research, and quite frankly, I'm just now getting right.
Here are some mistakes I made that you could avoid –
1) Edit, Edit, Edit –
Self-editing doesn't take the place of a professional editor. Hire someone you trust. Have them check for everything from grammatical errors to content fluidity.2) Know Your Idea –
I had an idea but not a fully developed concept.3) Know Your Format –
It doesn't matter what type of book you're writing if you don't' know what size to make it. I had no idea what I was getting into when I start writing my first book.
My new e-book Self-Publishing 101 – taking your idea from the concept is the perfect solution to assist you no matter where you are in your writing journey.
